Family Medicine Faculty Physician/Medical Director - Correctional Medicine
The University of Illinois College of Medicine Rockford (UICOMR) seeks a board-certified physician to serve as medical director of Correctional Medicine. This full-time position includes 10-20% direct patient care at our county jail while serving as the medical director of Correctional Medicine, overseeing a robust full-time medical enterprise at our 1,000+ inmate facility and juvenile detention center. Additional duties in our academic department include clinical care and faculty supervision of medical students and residents in both the inpatient and outpatient settings, with opportunities in education, research, and leadership.
The Winnebago County Jail, located in downtown Rockford, Illinois, is one of the largest jails in the state, with a capacity of approximately 1,324 beds in a 385,000-square-foot facility. It houses both county and federal inmates, providing 24-hour medical care to male and female inmates with various healthcare needs, including acute and chronic conditions. In addition to round-the-clock nursing care, the facility offers specialized services such as mental health, dental, optometry, and physical therapy. The juvenile detention center is a separate facility, accommodating up to 50 youth in a secure and supportive environment.
This position includes clinical responsibilities at UI Health Mile Square Health Center – L.P. Johnson Rockford, the primary training site for the Family Medicine Residency Program. The center emphasizes community health and patient-centered care, providing a foundational learning environment for resident physicians. Learners gain hands-on experience by rotating through various clinical settings, including the health center and correctional facilities, ensuring a well-rounded education across multiple healthcare environments.
Rockford, a progressive mid-sized metropolitan area in northern Illinois, is located approximately 85 miles west of Chicago. The city features an award-winning park system, several gardens showcasing diverse flora and landscapes, a prominent art museum along with other art-related attractions, a vibrant theater scene, a revitalized downtown, a river walk, a minor league hockey team, numerous golf courses, affordable living, a diverse dining scene, and convenient access to other major Midwest cities.
The ideal candidate is a board-certified family medicine physician licensed or license-eligible to practice in Illinois. Experience in Correctional Medicine is preferred.
