After 21 years as Upper Cervical Care Center – Rockford and 1^st Step Chiropractic, a NUCCA chiropractic office, we are excited to announce our new name: Spine and Body Renewal. The change marks a new chapter for the practice while honoring its long-standing tradition of gentle, patient-centered care established by the late Dr. Philip Schalow. Dr. Hannah Orem, who worked alongside Dr. Schalow for the last 10 years, has taken over ownership and expanded the practice to include occupational therapy, all while maintaining the gentle chiropractic techniques the community has come to trust.

“The decision to change the name was made thoughtfully, as we wanted to honor Dr. Schalow's incredible legacy while also representing the growth and future of our practice,” said Dr. Hannah Orem. “I am grateful to have practiced with Dr. Schalow, and I am excited to carry forward the gentle, precise approach that defines our care, now under a name that represents our continued commitment to serving our patients.”

Grand Re-Opening & Ribbon Cutting

To celebrate this transition, Spine and Body Renewal will host a grand re-opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 17 at 3:00pm at our office at 4350 Morsay Drive, Rockford, IL.  The event will include a patient appreciation day filled with special activities, giveaways, and an opportunity to meet the team, including Dr. Hannah Orem, her brother Gabriel Orem, OTR/L and their staff. We are a proud member of Miracle Mile Rockford, and are committed to contributing to the growth and health of our community. 

Meet Dr. Hannah Orem

Dr. Orem, a Rockford native, brings exceptional expertise and a personal connection to the chiropractic profession. She graduated Summa Cum Laude as valedictorian from Palmer College of Chiropractic and was also valedictorian of her class at Rockford Christian High School. Inspired to pursue NUCCA chiropractic care after her own life-changing experience as a patient during college, Dr. Orem is committed to quality, individualized care as well as a passion for education and nutrition. She enjoys educating patients and the community on healthy living. She is one of three Board Certified NUCCA chiropractors in the state of Illinois. She is also a member of the NUCCA Education Committee and an instructor of both chiropractic students and doctors.

Spine and Body Renewal specializes in the NUCCA (National Upper Cervical Chiropractic Association) technique, a gentle, non-invasive chiropractic method that corrects spinal misalignments without the popping, cracking, or twisting associated with traditional chiropractic care, making it ideal for patients of all ages.  The gentle, precise adjustments focus on the upper cervical spine, improving the body’s balance and overall function. NUCCA helps patients with a variety of conditions including headaches/migraines, low back pain, sciatica, dizziness/vertigo, concussion symptoms, and joint problems.

Expanded Services: Now Offering Occupational Therapy

Alongside chiropractic care, Spine and Body Renewal is pleased to introduce occupational therapy services, further enhancing its holistic approach to patient wellness. These new services aim to help patients recover from injuries, manage chronic conditions, and improve daily functioning through targeted therapies.

“Our goal is to provide a comprehensive care experience,” said Dr. Orem. “By adding occupational therapy, we are better equipped to support our patients’ journeys to optimal health, addressing not just pain relief but overall well-being.”

Meet Gabriel Orem, OTR/L

Gabriel Orem, OTR/L graduated with a Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy from St. Catherine University and a Kinesiology degree from the University of Northwestern – St. Paul.  Gabe, a Rockford native and valedictorian of Rockford Christian High School, provided therapy in outpatient settings with older adults throughout the Twin Cities for five years before returning to Rockford to join Dr. Orem, his sister, and the team at Spine and Body Renewal. 

Gabe says “I became an occupational therapist because I want to increase people’s quality of life by helping decrease pain and regain enjoyment in what they need and love to do.” Gabe’s expertise seamlessly integrates physical and mental well-being, incorporating soft tissue therapy and functional biomechanics for a comprehensive approach to health.  Through motivational interviewing, Gabe loves to learn people’s stories and create individualized care plans based on their needs and desires to help his patients improve their independence and quality of life.

A New Name, the Same Commitment to Community Health

While the name may be new, Spine and Body Renewal remains dedicated to the community with the same compassionate care that has been a hallmark of the office for over two decades. Dr. Orem and her team are proud to uphold the founding principles while looking toward a future of expanded services and continued excellence in patient care.
